Introductory lesson
An introductory riding lesson for a child begins on the ground with building trust and respect for the horse.
The young rider first learns to properly groom the horse, all while staying away of the horse’s body language.
Next comes tacking up, where the child is guided step-by-step to place the bareback pad, tighten it gently,
and carefully fit the bridle-learning to approach from the left side and handle each piece with calm, deliberate
movements. Basic horse safety is emphasized throughout: never stand directly behind the horse, approach
from the shoulder, and keep a safe distance from kicking range while leading or handling the horse.
Finally, the child mounts with assistance, learns proper posture and balance and practices simple walk cues.
Basic Flat work for the English Disciplines
A basic flat work lesson focuses on developing the rider’s position, balance, and control while the horse moves
“on the flat” (without jumping). The lesson typically beings at the walk where the rider practices maintaining a
correct equitation position. Once comfortable, the rider progresses to the trot, learning the posting trot. The
rider works on transitions between walk and trot, steering through turns and different exercises. Throughout
the lesson, the focus remains on building a secure, independent seat, clear communication with the horse,
and awareness of the horse’s balance and way of going, laying the foundation for more advanced disciplines.
Basic Flat work for the Western Disciplines
A basic flat for lesson emphasizes a relaxed, balanced, and effective rider position while encouraging the
horse to move forward willingly with a low head carriage, soft mouth and rounded topline. Throughout
the session, the focus remains on building and independent, balanced sear, clear yet subtle communication.
Over Fences
A jumping lesson builds on solid flat for foundations, introducing the rider to safely and effectively
navigating small obstacles while maintaining balance, rhythm, and a secure position over fences. This
lesson will only be available to students who have successfully mastered basic flat work.
